| This Peregrine Falcon,
falco peregrinus an endangered species,
lives on top of the highest building on Brigantine island NJ, the former
Brigantine Inn. In October 2003 I spent several hours behind
the curtain of my apartment window watching as he devoured two Northern Flickers
and then sat on the ledge. In October 2005 I again observed him at close
range devouring his prey and flying. The Peregrine is the fastest bird alive,
attaining a speed of up to 250 mph in a dive to kill prey. The
species is making a recovery after falling to low numbers from poisoning
by DDT and other pesticides. |
