These American Oystercatchers, haematopus  pulliatis, on Brigantine Island, New Jersey are common on the Atlantic coast during fall migration.  Once hunted to near extinction, they are now numerous and nest as far north as Massachusetts.   Their powerful bills enable them to piece the abductor muscles in mussels and other bivalves which are their primary food.
