The Downy Woodpecker, Picoides pubescens, occurs widely across the US and Canada.  It is the smallest North American woodpecker. This female in the John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge near Philadelphia, PA, is on a Phragmites stalk, an invasive species found near fresh water.
