The Wood Thrush, Hylocichla
mustelina, is one of the most common woodland species across the
eastern United States although it is now threatened as increasing
development removes contiguous woodlands. Its varied fluting song
is more often heard than the bird is seen. This one kept with a
mouthful of insects approaching me within a few feet in Jenkins
Arboretum, Devon, Pennsylvania, as I was photographing an oriole's
nest. This led me to find its nearby nest.
