The Savannah
Hawk (Heterospizias meridionalis) is
found in areas of grassland with scattered marshes or ponds where there are a few trees. It is a common species
in the Pantanal. Its preferred diet is snakes, fish, lizards, frogs and
toads, but it also feeds on small mammals, insects, beetles, caterpillars, grasshoppers, ants and spiders and occasionally birds. It is attracted to grass fires.
