On August 19,
2006, the second signing of the Treaty of Renewed Brotherhood between
the Lenape Nation of Pennsylvania and people and organizations near the
Delaware River took place at Pennsbury Manor, the estate of William Penn
in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. The Delaware River, known at the
Lenape Sippu, is a sacred river to the Lenapes. In 2002
before the signing of the first Treaty, a canoe trip from Hancock,
New York, to Cape May, New Jersey, covered the entire length of the
Delaware. From August 4 through 17 2006, that journey was
repeated, this time ending at Pennsbury Manor. Each day the
sojourners gathered for prayer before starting the days journey, an act
of respect for each other, the sacred waters of the river and thanks to
the Creator. The entire trip was a a act of reverence for
the River and its watershed, the lifeblood of the land.
Pictures below depict some of the beauty of the River and the joy of the
participants. For further information and the itinerary go to Rising
Nation River Journey.
