As I was
ascending the long staircase from the water back toward the University
of Vancouver, a man stopped in the middle said "Woodpecker,
woodpecker," and pointed to the side of the path. There, no more
than three or four feet from me, was this Pileated Woodpecker, Dryocopus pileatus
. I sat down and begin to shoot. My flash did not
seem to bother him as I stayed for at least ten minutes.
