The Greater Rhea, lives on the pampas, and open woodlands in the south-eastern part of South America. It stands about five feet tall and weighs about 50 lbs, making it the largest American bird.   It is in the same family with the Ostrich, the Kiwi, and the Emu,  but is only about half the size of an Ostrich.  It is a flightless omnivore.  We watched the Rheas go through the barbed wire fence, gracefully pulling their bodies between the wires.
