Columbia River Gorge Panorama

Columbia River Gorge Panorama

The Columbia River Gorge is the largest National Scenic Area in the US. Located a short distance east of Portland, Oregon, its 292,500 acres encompass a network of hiking trails, a concentration of waterfalls, and the largest river in the Nortwestern part of the US. Lying between twin peaks of the Cascade Range, Mt. Hood on the Oregon side and Mt. Adams on the Washington side, the Gorge is home to more than 70,000 people. Its geologic origins date to lava flows millions of years old carved more recently by floods at the end of the ice age. Native Americans were here at least 10,00 years before the first Europeans. Lewis and Clark traveled through the Gorge followed by the Oregon Trail pioneers. The natural scenic wonders of the Gorge are bordered by fertile farmland. This panoramic image of several stiched shots was taken from the Vista House at Crown Point.
