 Artist Statement

"There is in all things a pattern that is part of our universe. It has symmetry, elegance and grace - those qualities you find always in that which the true artist captures. You can find it in the turning of the seasons, in the way the sand trails along a ridge, in the branch clusters of the creosote bush or the patterns of its leaves." Frank Herbert, Dune

All things in the universe are interconnected, often in ways we don't immediately see or feel, but ways that are integral to who we are as humans and to everything else. Humans, animals and plants have the same basic mechanism for sensing, serotonin neurons. These are present in every living system. One task of the artist is to recognize the connections we have and portray them in ways that evoke feeling. I have chosen the theme Patterns of Nature to give some sense of these connections. My mission in photography is to produce images that portray the art of nature in ways that viewers can appreciate the beauty, diversity, and sacredness of the natural world, understand that we are part of this web of life, and be moved to act in ways that protect our only home, the living Earth, Gaia.

From sunsets to painted hills, from colorful leaves to rocks in the river, from birds in flight or on the water to flowing streams and mushrooms on fallen trees - all these patterns reflect a beauty present in everything. Dostoevsky noted in The Idiot that beauty will save the earth. I believe this and hope my portrayal of small reflections of this beauty will move your soul to recognition of deeper connections.
